New Year, New Me

So you’ve joined the “New Year, New Me” crowd with hundreds of resolutions as 2022 kicked into gear and as we’re heading into the 3rd month already, you’re left with protein shakes, fat burners, creatine, L-Carnitine, Glutamine….the list goes on! Starting a new fitness journey is daunting and you will have to unlearn a whole lot of bad habits whilst exercising not only your body, but also your mind as you’re becoming more disciplined.

The first thing to remember when you embark on this journey is that things WILL change. A lot of things! Chemical things in your brain and body as your gut gets introduced to new bacteria it needs to process. You’ll more than likely also go through withdrawals – whether it’s from sugar, carbs or alcohol, the effects can be just as traumatizing as it is for substance abusers. Sounds rough?! Unfortunately it is, but the rewards with consistency and sufficient support will come.

The key is to keep your mind positive. Don’t be hard on yourself, but do hold yourself accountable. Be kind to your body as it goes through changes and explore your transformation in wonder. Celebrate the milestones. Talk about it. Post about it. Brag about it! Once you have reached a chemical balance (call it a detox) you will find the physical aspects much more rewarding.

Consistency is a big word in the fitness world and rightly so. It really is key! Consistency in your workouts, eating habits, sleeping habits and overall lifestyle. Whether you choose to do this long-term or only for a few weeks it is never a bad choice. Just don’t fall for fad diets and do not stock your cupboard with unnecessary supplements. Less is more – even in the fitness world.

Start slow as your body needs to get used to the aches and pains. If you skip a day, it will be okay. Just don’t skip a week because it will become a month and then you’ll be committing to another year of unreachable goals and beat yourself up for not reaching the resolutions you made the year before.
